So what problems/ hang ups should I expect when mounting a SBC. Some issues I see might be mounting plates hitting the steering box and tunnel clearance for the bell housing

You will have to set the motor farther back. There are pics in this thread that show you how to I believe. The oil pan will hit the steering linkages. Trans clearence will be fine unless you raise the motor vs move it back

tunnel clearance for the bell housing yes, tunnel clearance has been an issue for me. to get a sbc where i want it, and to make room for engine mounted gas pedal, and shifter linkage,, i remove quite a bit of fire wall....and ill slit the tunnel all the way back to the tail of the tranny, and peel it open. if you look hard at this pic you can see what i mean. actually i guess pretty much the whole tranny is exposed. Buick, olds, pontiac, chevy up to 1976 should all be bolt in replacements (fullsize cars) Are rear steer and front steer boxes different?

heres one I jigged for my caddy this year...you can only see half but it looks the same and the half pictured. I used a plum bob some jack stands and a angle finder to get it all setup. It may not be the best rear end ever fabricated but it works just fine for me.
