I would love to have opinions on a TH200r4. I know it's not the best transmission but I have one from a 1985 monte carlo ss with a 305. Should I use it or scrap it? It's for a chain and bang derby. Thanks

Use it. I used a 200 for seven shows before I scrapped the car and tranny was still good but acquired a th350 after.

There was a guy around us and thats all he used to use and he did well.
I do know my trans core guy sells more 200Rs then 700Rs to hot rodders that want overdrive. So they must know or see something.

Especially behind a stock 305 for a wire show, I see no issues. Run a cooler.

I've never had any luck with them at all.

I have never messed with them. I always just shred them, regardless of their condition. Its not worth the hassle to try to sell them on craigslist.

They aren't anything special but cheaper than a th350 or th400. Don't count on it winning a show and don't have your bar set high on it but they do work out in a pinch. 700 r4 I have and use with no issues either. I know a few heavy hitters in mn use them also.

That's basically what I was trying to say. Nothing great but will work good enough to get by.

I got it for free, to put in a car that I got in a trade... So in my book, I invested nothing so there is nothing to lose! I wanted to buid this car for cheap, so why not use it...

The tailshaft doesn't have any support. Grab it and it will wobble unlike a 350 or 400. They do have a lower first. I have never had any luck with in drivers so I never tried one for a derby.

If I understand you correctly, the transmission is not installed in the car yet? If no, sell the th200 for any amount you can get. Take that money with whatever necessary added to it, then go buy a junkyard th350 or th400. If its already in the car and you are OK with it, then go run it. This is just my biased, closeminded opinion based on my personal experience which resulted in my hatred of th200s.

Burnt one up playing around in the yard with an olds 307. The car was a driver. If it can't handle one wheel peel street tire donuts in wet grass after just having pulled the plates off it I don't want any part of them lol

The transmission is not in the car yet. Considering what you said and what I just read, I think the best thing to do will be to sell it and buy a Th350 or a 400. Thanks!
