my girl just bought me this.$120. I used it this past weekend won't ever run without it again. I love it! this one I use now is great for side to side and backward impact. The front is ok to. That along with my new helmet is money well spent. I can turn around easily also. Its better with the neckbrace. Especially because I don't have to worry as much about awkward hits when im looking backwards.

Was gonna wear one my first time around despite my family members who have never worn one harassing me about it. Right before my heat I decided it was too tight (not my brace, was borrowed) and went without. Felt fine the next day despite my buddies believing that I should be in pain for not having one so I'm not too worried about it, I've also been able to be very loose in the car, so my muscles weren't straining during the hits.

It's not the hits you see or are giving, its the one you pile into someone and once you stop someone if doing the same somewhere where you didn't see them coming. I've been hit so hard with helmet strapped it ripped off and the buckle gave me a bloody nose while wearing a neck brace. Its UNpredictable out there and no matter how loose you think you I guarantee your wore out after the 15 minutes on the track.

Never considered the weight of the helmet. Its the single most important thing in my opinion when purchasing a helmet. Between your melon and your helmet, thats allot of weight you neck has to support during an impact.

No offense, but as a rookie driver I have a hard time finding much value in this. Some of the opinions in this thread are from 10 plus year veterans who have ran for years without and years with one. I ran for 5 years without one, some times I was fine, others sore as hell. The 5 years since I have been building much harder cars, hitting at much higher speeds and always feel fine the next day. Last night I took 3 hits in about 3 seconds. Only saw the first one coming. I got tossed around bad, feel nothing today. That combo of hits is the reason you should have a neck brace on.

I've also been able to be very loose in the car, so my muscles weren't straining during the hits. So, you have some sort of unique almost superhuman ability to self control your muscle tension at any given moment. Please enlighten the rest of us who you are able to achieve this. Is it mind/body control or a handful of pharmys and a couple cold beers that help you reach this level of superior muscle control. LOL

Some shows require a neck brace just like they require a helmet, think about how heavy your helmet is and add the weight of your head, that is a lot of leverage on your neck, kinda like trying to put a bowling ball on a pixi stick Spend the money, go home safe with proper safety equipment- hell most other halfs (wives, gfs, husbands etc) will buy it to help ensure your safe

Borrow if you have to also. There is nice enough people that will lend you one, plus it makes friends

Ok first this is just my experience based off of my run and a combined 10-15 runs made by my family. Two, the event I ran does not and has never required a neck brace. And three muscle relaxation isn't unheard of, and having been in a roll over I used the experience to try and get into the mindset of what I was about to go through.

Well then I guess you don't need any further advice on this website coming from a family of 15 runs... most guys here hit that mark in three months...

Are you a Jedi Master? Im only busting your chops man. I am in no way form or fashion trying to discredit your run your friends/family many suscessful runs. I am merely discrediting your advce that anyone intentionally getting involved in an automobille accident would not obviously be much safer with proper safety equipment than someone without. The real problem is that most of us are very stressed out and have no control over many things in our lives. Especially our muscle tension/mind control. You have a unique and special gift my friend.

Wasn't trying to suggest not wearing one just stating my experience with it. Also in my area most people run 2-3 times a year, mainly because suitable cars are becoming harder to find as people are simply driving them till there's nothing left.

I've been running for over 15 years without one and make no doubt I've been sore afterwords every time. As we speak I am recovering from 4 fractured vertebrae, C7 and T1, T2, T3 (not derby related) and let me tell all of you that is not something that you want to go through. I've now broken 18 bones in my life including my hip and my jaw and I can honestely say that these 4 have been the absolute worst ones to deal with. If I'd of known before what I know now about neck injuries I would have NEVER gotten in a derby car without a neck brace. A good neck brace and a lighter helmet are both going to be necessities before I strap it back on and get back into a derby car next spring so thank you all for the information about what you run and how it works.

a tip on motocross helmets, remove the visor if possible. went nose to nose with a kid this past summer and put him backwards into the wall and he was stuck with his head back, visor stuck on under roof bracing.
