The 96 should have a 4T60E electronic transmission. If you don't hotwire the transmission you will almost never get 1st. So without 1st you'll have a lumina that cant get out of its own way. starting out in 2nd also causes alot more heat, heat isn't good for these motors because of limp mode. To try and eliminate limp mode you should pull the coolant temp sensor out of the intake (its by the thermostate) put a pipe plug in the hole and zip tie the sensor to something. It will read air temp rather than water temp. Hotwire Coil packs just removes the computer from your ignition control. Yes, I have seen these items discussed piecemeal in the W body thread but what would be great is a succinct explanation of these things here in the first few pages so that someone can get the primary info quickly..... when it is buried a tidbit at a time throughout 100+ pages what usually happens is they just keep asking the same questions over and over. You made a nice list there on the first page, what I am hoping you (or someone) could do is list the problem and the solution together in one spot. SO for example, "Hotwire the coil packs" leads someone to wonder "why would I do that" etc etc, you see what I'm getting at I'm sure. I'm not near as experienced with these things as some of you other guys or I'd take it on myself.

Coil packs, Pink is 12volt+ black is 12volt- leave the crank position wires hooked up (purple and yellow twisted) don't need any of the other 5 unless you want to run a tach. one of the two white ones is the tach wire. here's a good example, I'm fired up (pun intended) that someone was cool enough to share this knowledge with me but I'm not sure what to do with it. Do I do this always, or only if converting the control system to carburetor and some kind of manual ignition system? Or in other words, If I'm running the stock EFI and ignition with stock computer etc. so I still need to fool with the coil pack wires? If so, why? -thanks in advance-

Ok here it goes and pay attention!!! You can hotwire the trans whether you are running ECM or you carb it... Now if you have a 4t60e... 1. On front of trans there is a ROUND pigtail, cut wires long enough to work with them. 2. Peel wrap off and on the very bottom of the plug there are the 2 wires you will need... One is Green and one is yellow/black stripe, these two you twist together and run a hot wire to these... 3. Go clockwise from the yellow/black stripe skip one and it will be tan run ground wire and you should have 1st gear... I have had a few that were odd but think they were 3.4 dohc... Also you can put a toggle switch in so you can have second gear...

We are working on getting all the information back on here so it is more specific and easier to find. I will update and edit the 2nd post on the first page as new info offered and questions are asked. PLEASE BE PATIENT.
