So I got into a heated debate with my derby buddy! Is a Turbo 400 better to run behind a mild built 350 with stock 280 gears, or is a Turbo 350?!? What will turn the tires faster to help make up for the high gear ratio?!?

with that high of a ratio you're gonna smoke the 350 a lot quicker than the 400. gm put the 400 in big cars/ trucks over the 350 for a reason.

So the Turbo 350 is the better choice?!?

A TH400 is always a better transmission compared to a TH350. If you are worried about stock gears, just run small tires. JMO

I know a 400 is a better choice based off of how much more abuse it can take, but will a 400 turn the tires faster or slower than a 350! My thought is that the internal size of the components in the 400 will rob horse power and in turn not transfer as much energy to the rear tires which isn't gonna help the high gear ratio!!! Right or wrong?!?

Right or wrong?!? That's true that a 400 will have more parasitic loss compared to a 350, but in all honesty, what difference would it make in our application? Your tires are still spinning, and the type of trans won't change that in regards to parasitic loss.

I have a couple buddies that drag race and they're always looking for short shaft Turbo 350s! They say it's because the 400s reduce horse power and said that the 350s are they way to go! They say that it also helps the gear ratio! Is this one of those topics that there's gonna be multiple opinions with no clear cut answer?!?

We're not drag racing, our applications are very different so what they say is extremely biased. The 400 is the stronger trans for our application which is why they are sought after. 350s are fine for use but they can't stand up to the abuse that 400s can.

Either way both can break if you have both I'd run either

I've had a couple different trans rebuilders say that aside from an Allison automatic, a 400 GM trans is the best tranny you can run in a derby. Just set the two side by side and look at the size of the cases. I would run the 400 all day. Don't listen to drag racers when it comes to derby stuff, our two sports have very little if anything in common.

In drag racing there are lots of variables that do not pertain to derbies. Drag racing requires as much power to the wheels as you can get and derbies need to have reliable parts. You can have someone build a 350 and machine the hubs a put more clutches in then they hold up well but your are looking at spending as much for the work as buying 2 400s.

TH400 2.48 - 1.48 - 1.00 TH350 2.52 - 1.52 - 1.00

I had a derby guy recently tell me that he runs a built 350 over a 400 because the 400 doesn't have the cooling properties the 350 does. I was a bit skeptic and have been asking around ever since I heard that...

They're saying that because the 350 has a lower first gear than the 400 and the 400 has a larger pump taking more power to turn it. Once again, doesn't matter for us. Run a 400 and call it a day.
