I will say that I timemy sbc at 30-34 degrees at 3000 rpms with the vac advance hooked up and never have a problem with it starting hot, but fuel type has alot to do with it. Honestly I'm not sure but I thought the vacuume advannce was only needed at high speeds? I have never hooked on up and never had a problem?? Your correct, its for "fuel saving", but yet that one of those beat a dead horse issues. People think it helps until the line pops off and it starts sucking air and running like crap .

Well if you dont put a hose on it then nothing to pop off.. just seal it off

Electric or manual pump? If electric without a regulator maybe getting to much fuel to carb.

I know everyone says you don't need the advance but I had a guy I trust tell me to do this and never had problems. As for a vacuum leak I always change the hose each year. I also have engines that don't have the vacuum advanced hooked up but the though with it hooked is to get a little more timing with the engine running and you can retard the timing a few degrees to help it start it's a preference not a must.

Retarded ignition timing could be the cause of your fuel being burned after exiting the combustion chamber. I would advance it a few degrees and hook up vacuum advance if you don't already have it hooked up to full manifold vacuum

I tell ya what, if you want a good flame show, run a gallon of paint thinner to 4 gallons of gas and watch the pipes turn orange and let the blue flames light up the sky haha. NOTE: Only do this on an engine you don't plan on running time and time again.
