Haven't seen a thread on here for little things that could save your bacon so I thought I would start one. Please add to it because I'm sure there are lots that other people have never thought of and newbies would like to learn.
Here is a few: Silicone on top of my dizzy cap to keep plugging wires on Duck tape the radiator hose Back up hand throttle Solder my wires Duck tape u joints Electric fan

Tighten or recheck your battery cables and also clean them. (Bring extra terminal connectors) Double check the terminals so they wont short out with a metal box.(take your wedding ring off while doing this) When you bolt your battery boxes, coolers, gas tanks, seat, seat belt, have BIG washers on the bottom so nothing pulls through, because it will. allow your wires to have some play during impact so nothing pulls or breaks ex. starter button, elect fuel pump, fans, etc. if you have a starter button, have pig tails as a back up. keep your wires, tranny lines, gas lines, clean, organized and secure with zip ties, duct tape whatever. so when things bend and move it they dont stretch or get crimped. and climbing in and out in the pits and catching your foot on something and ripping it will piss you off. double nut anything that you do not want to come lose. (Shifter linkage) or use lock nuts. replace the pinch style hose clamps with the screw type. triple check everything.
And bring spare tires for after the derby also, pushing a junked up car on 2 front rims with a wood floor trailer is like a cheese grater.

On important bolts, take and put a dab of silicone sealer on the threads, to help keep the nuts on. Learned that off-roading. And if you need to take the nut off, it's easy to peal the sealer off. If you have the clip type holders for your distributor cap, put a wire tie around them, to help hold the clips on. If you have the GM type cap, put a couple ties criss-cross over the top of cap/bottom of distributor. After that, use duct tape over the whole thing. Also helps keep the cap on, and helps keep any water from getting in there. And tape the dist wire in the coil.

Charge battery is a good one! Seems so simple and common sense but that's what put me out in my first derby

Make sure your driver's seat is bolted/welded in securely (kinda hard to drive around on a loose seat) Double clamp fuel and tranny lines (had a fuel line pulled off the tank before) I also always have a pair of vice grips inside the car with me to handle random weird things like broken battery terminals, broken gloor shifter, and at one time a broken steering wheel :-)

make sure the car is running good.no point in putting all the time into building it if the engine runs like crap.

Wire open the choke, on a coil suspension rear car weld a chain on the body and down to the rear end, if allowed, this keeps the car from coming up so high your springs don't pop out. (I can't weld my springs in) Add a bottle of dura lube to the motor, seen my block glowing red hot but never lost a motor yet and always started!

bring extra belts. bring spare radiator. have all extra wires.
triple check that you have as much of your garage as you can bring with you on the track.
you will mess something up on your car, thats going to happen and will be random. its on you to have the tools on you. you already have 5 minutes till consi or feature, dont waste it hand tightening or driving home to get tools.
i like this thread, everything mentioned before we have done/forgotten.
