if it was me i'd invest in a mini spool before welding... could save an ass ache. i've busted too many gears welding them and you can get a mini spool for pretty cheap

I'd much rather weld spiders than ever run a mini spool in any rearend. Never had a welded one break but have seen lots of mini spools grenade...

Welded all of mine, i hate mini spools. If your buying a spool buy a full spool.

I just received a dana 44 offset rear, believed to be a 1973 or so with 3.73 gears. Is this worth using? I tried to do a little research with little luck. If someone would enlighten me a little I would appreciate it.

welding a 9" isn't the same as welding an open back rear..
ya have to remove the carrier,, split it,, than weld the spiders in the perfect position to mate with the side gear,,,, If its not right,, you have a worthless carrier,,,
if you get a mini spool,, use the stock pin,,,,

welding one is easy, nothing to line up. After splitting the carrier get rid of the 2 small spider gears and just weld all the way around the big gears the axles go into to the sides of the carrier. Pics on derbythis.com in the general building tips thread.
