In the past, slowly drilling with cobalt drill bits and oil has been suggested.

The GM tail shafts are hardened steel. It seems unlikely to me that Ford would have done something different in this case.

Had an fmx i drilled that was the same way. I ended up getting two snap on cobalt bits, heated the tail shaft with a torch and drilled it while it was hot. Used one bit for thirty seconds or so, dropped it in water to cool, switched bits and keep rotating them like that. After the first half inch it seemed to get easier.

If you find a good quality concrete bit that drill's a hole just a tad smaller then tha tap you plan to use it works great. If your trans is out it is a bit easier because you can turn you trans up on end and lean on your drill.. Just pack grease around the tailshaft seal to keep shavings from getting in it and don't get carried away with pressure.. Light pressure , plenty of cutting oil and turn the bit slow.. Let tha bit do tha work. After you get about 1/2 inch deep , you can switch to a regular bit. Those shafts are not harded all tha way. They work good to bore new holes in springs too..

Does anyone build a nice shifter for a C - 6 or an FMX trans. I built my last two but keep building new drive trains and i hate swapping parts from a running car to make the second work..... my shifters work but are crude and have a lot of play in them.

The mopar and GM tranny tail shafts drill easy. The Ford AOD was much harder steel and I tried may different drill bits and methods with no success. I had to use torch to carefully heater the hole without heating up the entire tailshaft. I could drill a 1/3 inch or so then would heat again. It was just as easy to drill as a GM this way....Maybe this post will prevent somebody else wasting a entire day getting different drillls and drilling, breaking or ruining most of the new drill bits, and getting very pissed off....

Built my own out of strap. Didn't take too long and worked well. Ive always built mine but Im looking for a little bit better design as mine have always given me problems, of course I can't really guarantee i won't have problems with someone else's design. thatsucks have you tried that shifter on ebay? Is it good and do you have a seller name I can look for?
