I also need to figure out the 2.2 Cavi engine very soon. It's newer than VATS, though ('98). I want to put it into an older car.

That came up a few times when I was doing some searches... Quick search found this! Pretty sure this is for you, buddy www.kingbain.com/how-to-permanently-disable-gm-passlock-system/EDIT Just realized ^this^ link is already in this thread

2000 Lumina (Mom's driver) with the VATS system:
With key in "on" position, all lights light up as they should, hear the fuel pump, etc.
With key in "start" position, "security" light, and "volts" light remain on, but nothing happens.
The battery did read only 12 volts with the key off, and only 11 with the key on.
Swapped in the known good battery from my pickup. Same symptom.
Old battery is currently debating whether it wants to take a charge. Negative cable looks a bit crusty. Will get a new cable tomorrow & see what happens. Other input is welcome in the mean time.
Is there a reset procedure for the VATS like there is on Pass Lock?

^^^^^^^^Replaced battery cable and battery. Still nothing when turning the key to "start". Starts and runs just fine by jumping across the starter solenoid, but the "security" light flashes, the radio display will only read "LOC", and the little LED light by the radio's power/volume control flashes. Shuts off fine with the key, and all of the accessories except the radio seem to work fine while it is running.
Key is chipped. Label on radio reads "theftlock"

I let it sit with the key on for 13 minutes to no avail. Am I correct in assuming that bypassing the Vats in the ignition will not cure the theftlock radio? don't you need the pin code for that?
Also discovered that something is killing the battery. Drained my pickup battery in under 24 hours just sitting.

I unplugged the wires that go from the key to the cluster while it was running now it starts every time I go to start it. I even let it sit a few days with battery disconnected then hooked the battery back up and it started right up with them wires still disconnected. Hope that helps

Ok, maybe this might have been covered but what years of chevy lumina cars have the vats antitheft device ? Do they all for those years made or is it an option. The car im thinking on is a 97 lumina. Column has been butchered but will start everytime provided you jump accross the solenoid. And how the heck you do away with that dam inteock on the column that prevents you from shifting ? I plan on keeping the factory column and shifter on this build.
