is there anything specific that needs done to these cars as far as the steering components, like changing the steering box or modifying the steering column.?

I have had good luck with the stock boxes. All Mopar steering columns need to be modified. The only steering components I've had trouble with is bent spindles, but I don't think they are weak they're just the first part that gives after getting pounded bad

not sure on the spline count but, to get the shaft off drive the roll pin out and it will slide off.

Ditch the front bumper and find a pointy off a new yorker 77, 78. Welded it solid to the front end if your rules will permit. Drive with the front end of the car and tear the track apart. Mike.

Sub Imps are IMO the easiest Mopars to build. 3 major areas:
1) factory motor mounts are crap. See page 1 for my suggestion of how to fix. This is the best method I have found so far, my only complaint with this method is that if you throw away the sub you also throw away the work you did. I'm working on a bolt-in solution but it needs more R&D. Until then... see page 1
2) front bumper won't do much except mush against the beam. Weld or bolt a better bumper to the front to hold the action further away from your radiator. Whatever bumper you put up there will get killed by the frame eventually but it will help things in the meantime.
3) the trunk should be built to roll into a ball when other people hit it. Don't leave it stock or it will shoot up and expose your axle. See the 65-73 Y frame tips thread for tips on how to build the trunk... these cars are identical to Y frame cars from the driver door to the rear bumper, only the firewall and front clip is different.

Will a boxcar steering box be a direct bolt to these frames?

I tried it for the first time recently, it was a short run and not enough data to be conclusive. Maybe with some more seat time I can decide how effective it is. how much tipping/tilting did you try? I see some kind of the method to the madness. Thinking 2.5" at firewall, sucked up tight in the back. Just making a guesstimate.

I didn't put the tape on it but I would guess it's pretty close to what you described. Will run it again in Sept to see how it does
