I have a 8.5 10 bolt in a 80s caprice, c clip rearend, can I use c clip eliminators and what axles do I use since it will be bolt in C clip eliminators are design to retain a axle in case it breaks not a good choice for derbying. All of the eliminators I have used are aluminium and would break from a wheel shot.

Has anyone tried using the side gears out of a 31 spline Ford 8.8 in a GM 8.5 ten bolt?
I have some 28 spline 8.8s laying around but I dont have access to the 10 bolt yet.
Figured Id see if anyone has tried it yet. Cheaper than a spool and if it works, pretty simple fix for the 10/12 combo.

Just done it the other way. I don't have any ford 31 spliners. Been putting wagon side gears in 8.8s.

Are the pinion flanges different between 10 and 12 bolts, and caddy rears

I don't know about pinion diameter but the flange bolt pattern part are the same so your slider will work on all of them.

Other than housing ends no different than a ten bolt. Little more grinding than I wanted. Lincoln you know all this why you asking?

Ive never mixed and matched the internals from brand to brand.
I know the 8.8s and 8.5s are very similar thats why I asked if anyone has tried it yet.
The axles and housings and housing ends are easy stuff.

Even after you get the spiders in the carrier the holes where the axles go through are to small for the 31 spline axles. The older 8.5 carriers get thin when you machine them to allow the axles to fit.

And that's why I just usually go with spools.
Makes sense to me

The carrier from the 8.6 rears in the 88 up trucks can be machined to run the 31 spline axles and has the same outside diameter bearing race as the 8.5. I use those ccarriersto make 31 spline c cclip rears.

The spiders don't seat far enough in the carrier and it breaks at the of the spiders at least mine did. Then it chewed up the ring and pinion. The truck carrier is a little thicker in that area and I've never had one break yet, but anything can break.
