Haven't been under my car to look at the rear end yet, have been addressing other problems. the build sheet that i found in both front doors says it has GQ1 axle ratio st, and GU2 273 Axle....how do i know if its posi or if i need to weld the gears? the previous owner said it would spin both wheels, but i just want to be sure. its a 400 4bbl car with a TH400

the rears out of buicks and olds and poncho's that is a 10 bolt cover and 12 gear, will the guts out of a ten bolt work in them? say carrier or a spool? thanks

Only thing they are good for is building a 31 spline C-clip'ed setup....not ideal but better than a 28 spline C-clip if that's all you got...It takes a $60 carrier from a newer pickup and some time to open up the holes for the axles but it can be done....if it's all you've got.

Alot if not all of the the roundbacks had 31 spline axles. Alot have 31 spline c clips. Olds wagons are the ones most often seen with 12 bia. Good axles but no gears avaliable to my knowledge. You can use the side gears out of a 31 spline c clip in a drilled out 10 bolt carrier to make a geared rear end. Cheaper than a spool.

posted a question on another thread.but the question is .i have 31 spline axles that are b.i.a. and if your looking at the axle from the side view you see the retainer, seal, bearing and then something that looks like a oversized washer/bushing.the question is what is the name of the oversized washer/bushing. what is it's fuction..One of my axles is missing this and i'm assuming its a important part.i've dropped alot of money into this rearend which is the 10bolt with a fullspool and gears new bearigs etc.any info would go a long way..

I believe what you are talking about is the "wedding ring" as some people refer to it. It presses onto the axle to hold the bearing on.

Does anybody know if the pinion shaft on a 74 caddy is the same as just a regular 10 bolt so I can switch the flange and run my slider?

I have a 8.5 10 bolt BIA and need to change a broken axle. It looks like the (wedding ring) stayed in the axle tube. What do I do with this? Does it just pry out or what? thanks Mike

i was told via;another thread that it's a bearing retainer..next to the bearing..(jugulator) told me what it was..as for the retainer being caught in the housing .did you try to push it out with he rearend be completely disassembled.as for keeping it on next time. a friend of mine told me to weld just a little bead next to it .so that it does'nt slide off..
